Egypt’s health sector is in dire need of an overhaul, but it has yet to attract much attention from the country’s tech entrepreneurs.

The well documented problems within the public health system, including stray animals and raw sewage being found in hospitals and major corruption throughout the sector, creates a big incentive for middle class and wealthy Egyptians to look for other options.

Wamda has tracked down 14 startups, launched between 2008 and 2015, which are positioned throughout the ‘healthtech’ field. They cover hardware, ecommerce, social ventures and standalone digitized doctor shops.

Most are leaders in their field in Egypt, if not the sole actor entirely, and all are enlisting either online or high-tech strategies to fundamentally alter the country’s medical sector.
